Deep within the vibrant tapestry of Istanbul, nestled between bustling streets and serene green hills, lies Ayazağa Mahallesi. A place whose name echoes the legacy of a prominent family descended from Central Asian Kipchak Turks. Ayazağa Mahallesi takes its name from Ayaz Ağa, a descendant of Ayaz Pasha, whose lineage traces back to Artuk Bey, the son of Eksük, and his son Ilgazi Bey. This connection to a powerful historical figure adds another layer of intrigue to Ayazağa Mahallesi. The neighborhood’s history stretches back over 300 years, a testament to its enduring presence in Istanbul’s narrative. This rich past is palpable in every corner of Ayazağa, from the ancient trees that shade its streets to the time-worn stones of its oldest buildings. The heart of Ayazağa Mahallesi is marked by its central mosque. This mosque, also over three centuries old, stands as a silent witness to the passage of time and the changing fortunes of the neighborhood. Today, Ayazağa Mahallesi is a blend of old and new. Traditional working-class Turkish culture mingles with modern influences, creating a unique atmosphere that sets it apart from other Istanbul districts. The natural beauty surrounding Ayazağa Mahallesi adds to its charm. Three sides of the neighborhood are embraced by lush forests, offering a welcome respite from the city’s urban sprawl. Despite its proximity to the bustling metropolis, Ayazağa Mahallesi retains a sense of tranquility. This is a place where one can still find pockets of peace amidst the vibrant energy of Istanbul. The population of Ayazağa Mahallesi, approximately 35,000 residents, reflects the diverse tapestry of Istanbul itself. Many residents are of Black Sea origin, hailing from cities like Giresun, Samsun, Sinop, Kastamonu, Ordu, Gümüşhane, Trabzon, and Rize. Ayazağa is also home to established families, many of whom have witnessed the area’s transformation from a rural village to a thriving neighborhood. The land in Ayazağa, once divided into parcels in the 1950s, has significantly appreciated in value over time. This transformation has shaped the neighborhood’s demographics and contributed to its present character. Although a metro line passes within a kilometer of Ayazağa, it currently does not serve the neighborhood directly. However, future plans include the construction of an ITU-Ayazağa Village Metro Line, promising improved connectivity for the residents. In the 1990s, Ayazağa was renowned for its picnic areas. Sadly, many of these green spaces have been lost due to forest fires and development. However, efforts are being made to restore some of these areas. In 2013, a new recreational area was established in the Yeşiltepe region by then-Şişli Mayor Mustafa Sarıgül. Ayazağa Mahallesi remains a vibrant and evolving neighborhood. Its blend of history, natural beauty, and diverse community make it a truly captivating destination within the sprawling metropolis of Istanbul.
