“Ever wondered how a small seed of faith can blossom into a vibrant community?” That’s the story of the Ethiopian Christian Fellowship Church in the UK or ECFCUK. Let’s step back in time to 1979. A small group of Ethiopian Christians gathered in the UK. They yearned to worship God in their mother tongue.
Initially, growth came from evangelical Christians arriving from Ethiopia. Imagine small gatherings. These led to a significant meeting in 1980 in Preston. The family of Morrin and Kasaye Degefu and Dr. Abraham organized it. This meeting connected isolated members. Practical assistance was given where needed.
Simultaneously, something special was happening in central London. Sisters Megbar and Meseret Tefera alongside Melesse Mergia hosted home gatherings from October 1980. These created space for fellowship. Ethiopian Christians in Britain found encouragement. They had come to London for various reasons including study. The home fellowship numbers grew quickly. A main service was needed.
The Ethiopian Christian Fellowship Church’s first weekly gathering had 12 Christians. It took place at Kensington Temple. It continued every Saturday afternoon. Soon after, London became home to ECFCUK.
From 1990, the church grew through evangelization. Ethiopians and Eritreans living in the UK found salvation. The leadership team created a constitution. They structured the church with a Board of Trustees. The Board of Elders and Deacons managed spiritual matters. The church believes the Lord’s hand guided this growth. They give Him all the glory.
The name ‘Ethiopian Christian Fellowship Church in the UK’ reflects its origins. In 1979 it was named ‘Ethiopian Christian Fellowship of Great Britain’. In 1994, it transitioned into a church. The new name represented the church’s diverse denominational background.
Finding a permanent home was challenging. But in 2009, the Lord opened a door. ECFCUK acquired The Tabernacle in Central London. Weekly collections and member gifts financed it.
The Ethiopian Christian Fellowship Church extends its ministry beyond London. It participates in developmental work in Ethiopia. Medical equipment was provided to Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa. Evangelism in rural areas of Ethiopia was supported. Financial support was given to those in need especially children. In London, a feeding programme for the homeless occurs.
ECFCUK operates with transparency. Its finances are audited annually. Reports are sent to the Company House and the Charity Commission since 2015.
The church’s ministry focuses on six core values. These are righteousness, honouring God and loving one another. Also being a disciple of Jesus Christ, being trustworthy and demonstrating Christ in practical living.
Today, the Ethiopian Christian Fellowship Church has between 300 and 400 members. New members join. Some leave to spread the Gospel. The church’s youth ministry is thriving. There is potential for an English-led service. ECFCUK continues to grow and serve its community. It is a testament to faith. It demonstrates the power of unity and dedication.
