Vibrant colors explode across the three panels of the Skifcha Mural. This isn’t just paint. It’s a story. A story of collaboration. A story of cultures blending. The Skifcha Mural is located on the corner of Tangihua Street and Dockside Lane.

The mural celebrates the culture and diversity of Tāmaki Makaurau. Local artists and art students joined forces to create this masterpiece. International students Nikita Sharma Celia Lee and Jenny Zhong designed and painted one panel. They worked alongside respected local artists Ross Liew Hana Maihi and Poi Ngawati. Their aim was to explore what it means to create public art in New Zealand.

Hana and Poi’s panels focus on Māori heritage and taiao the environment. They highlight the rich history and the natural landscape that shaped Auckland. The entire mural beautifully depicts the importance of welcoming different cultures to Tāmaki Makaurau. The area stretches from Britomart to The Strand.

The students’ panel is particularly striking. It features a poutama a step-like pattern seen in tukutuku panels. This represents the three hapū of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Te Taou Te Uringutu and Ngā Oho. An awa a stream is also depicted. It references local tributaries that once flowed into the Waitematā Harbour. A variety of flowers from different countries celebrates the diverse cultures in Tāmaki Makaurau.

The students participated in a three-day wānanga at Ōrākei Marae. There they learned about Māori history and the mural’s location in Te Tāngaroa. This is Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei owned land. The international students’ panel received funding from a $20000 grant. The other two panels were funded by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.

The Skifcha Mural is more than just art. It’s a symbol of unity. It shows how different backgrounds can come together to create something beautiful. It’s a testament to the welcoming spirit of Auckland. It reminds us of the importance of respecting the land and its rich history. The Skifcha Mural is a vibrant and meaningful addition to Auckland’s artistic landscape. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting this dynamic city. Take your time to appreciate its intricate details and the powerful message it conveys. It’s a true representation of Tāmaki Makaurau’s spirit of diversity and inclusivity.
