Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Lyon’s streets, a silent storyteller awaits. The René-Maria Burlet Plaque, an unassuming stone sentinel, whispers tales of a life intertwined with art, faith, and the weight of the world. The René-Maria Burlet Plaque marks the very spot where René-Maria Burlet, a multifaceted French artist, resided and worked from 1933 to 1989. Here, at 122 Rue Saint-Georges, in the heart of Lyon’s 5th arrondissement, Burlet’s creative spirit flourished. Born in 1907 in Albertville, Burlet’s artistic journey led him to the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he not only honed his skills but also forged lifelong connections with fellow artists. It was in Lyon that he encountered Petresco, a master fresco painter who ignited Burlet’s passion for the ancient art form. The plaque also commemorates Burlet’s founding of the Académie du Minotaure, a rebellious art academy that challenged the established artistic norms of Lyon. This academy, born in 1942 within the walls of Burlet’s studio, championed a pedagogical approach to art education. Tragically, the academy’s first iteration was cut short. The destruction of Burlet’s studio during the dynamiting of Pont d’Ainay in 1944 forced him to flee to Chambéry with his family. However, like a phoenix from the ashes, the Académie du Minotaure was revived upon Burlet’s return to Lyon in 1947. René-Maria Burlet’s artistic legacy extended beyond the Académie du Minotaure. The René-Maria Burlet Plaque stands as a testament to his prolific career. His art encompassed paintings, frescoes, and stained glass, often imbued with his unique blend of sacred surrealism. Interestingly, the name René-Maria not only honored his wife, Marie, his constant collaborator, but also reflected his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary, inspired by a pilgrimage to La Salette-Fallavaux. As you stand before the René-Maria Burlet Plaque, imagine the vibrant life that unfolded within these walls. The annual exhibitions, the lively discussions with fellow artists, the creation of breathtaking works that continue to inspire. The plaque serves as more than just a marker. It’s a portal to a rich artistic past, a reminder of the enduring power of creativity, and a tribute to a man whose art touched the hearts and souls of many.
