Did you know that Our Lady and St. John’s Wood is one of London’s first Catholic churches built after the Catholic Emancipation in 1829? This very spot marks a pivotal moment in religious history. The Church of Our Lady St. John’s Wood was built in 1836. It stands as a testament to faith.

Let’s delve into the story of its creation. Two sisters named Louise and Jessie Gallini funded Our Lady and St. John’s construction. They used a legacy from their father, Sir John Gallini. He was an Italian refugee. Sir John became a prominent dancing master and musical entertainment promoter in London. The Pope even made him a member of the Equestrian Order of the Golden Spur.

Originally the Gallini sisters wanted to establish a mission in Hanover Square. Bishop James Yorke Bramston opposed this idea. He believed it was too close to Spanish Place. He feared it would reduce attendance there. So, the sisters chose St. John’s Wood. In 1832, a temporary chapel was built on land leased from the Eyre Estate. Four years later in 1836, this church opened.

The sisters faced another challenge. They wished for the Society of Jesus or the Jesuits to oversee the mission. Despite appeals to the Duke of Norfolk and Pope Gregory XVI, they were unsuccessful. Bishop Bramston’s opposition meant that secular clergy have always served this parish.

Fr James O’Neil became the first priest in 1836. He had previously served in Bermondsey. Fr O’Neil quickly established schools. This was before free universal schooling existed. He provided education for about 300 children. He also provided clothes and food to the poorest students.

In 1850, Pope Pius IX restored the Hierarchy of England and Wales. Our Lady and St. John’s Wood then became part of the Diocese of Westminster. Fr O’Neil continued to serve. He became a Canon in 1852. He remained here until his death in 1868.

Since its founding in 1832, Our Lady has had 14 parish priests. Fr Philip Cavanagh served twice. He returned after his successor retired due to ill health. The longest-serving priest was Fr James O’Neil. He served for 32 years. Canon William Wood was a close second. He was appointed in 1936. He served for 25 years until his death in 1961.

Today, Our Lady and St. John’s Wood continues its mission. It welcomes Christians. It welcomes those seeking to understand Christianity. The community focuses on learning and understanding the Bible. They follow the example of Jesus. The church offers daily services. It provides sacraments. It has an active music program. It provides various ways to support its mission.

As you leave Our Lady and St. John’s, remember its rich history. Reflect on the faith and dedication. Consider the impact it has had on the community. Think about how it continues to serve future generations.
