Established in 1963, Hiroshima Prefectural Hiroshima Special Support School has undergone a fascinating transformation. Originally named Hiroshima Prefecture Nursing School, it relocated to its current site in 1981. The school caters to students with intellectual disabilities and multiple disabilities, from elementary to high school. Hiroshima Prefectural Hiroshima Special Support School’s design is remarkable. A 150-meter long eave stretches along the west side. This covered area can accommodate up to 20 buses, facilitating the arrival and departure of students who rely on shuttle services from across Hiroshima City. The school is more than just classrooms. It includes specialized facilities like a food processing room, a cleaning room, and a customer service/sales room. These spaces provide vocational training, equipping students with valuable life skills and preparing them for future employment opportunities. In 2007, the school underwent a significant change. Its name was officially changed to Hiroshima Prefectural Hiroshima Special Support School. This reflected a shift towards a more inclusive approach to education, recognizing the unique support needs of each student. Another pivotal moment occurred in 2016. The school introduced a curriculum specifically designed for students with intellectual disabilities. It also became a combined facility for students with physical disabilities and intellectual disabilities, furthering its mission of inclusive education. Hiroshima Prefectural Hiroshima Special Support School stands as a testament to Hiroshima’s commitment to providing quality education for all its children. It represents a journey of growth, adaptation, and a dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
