Is this it? This humble log cabin, the Liebelt Cabin, might not look like much, but its story is woven into the very fabric of Texas history. This unassuming structure, built around 1869, stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of a German immigrant named August Liebelt.

Imagine, if you will, a young August, just 26 years old, arriving in Texas after a long journey from Bremen, Germany. Can you picture him, fresh from serving in the Civil War, eyes set on a new life? He claimed 80 acres of public land under the Homestead Act, a symbol of hope for many war veterans. This cabin, crafted from sturdy Texas cedarwood, became his refuge, a testament to his skills and determination in a new and untamed land.

August lived a full life, eventually selling his homestead and purchasing land in Grayson County. Though he died in 1911, his legacy lived on in the sturdy cabin he built with his own hands. The cabin, remarkably, still stands today, thanks to the efforts of Gwen and Joe Wunneberger who bought it in the 1950s and the City of Lakeway who meticulously moved and restored it to its current location.

As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Imagine August Liebelt, a man who crossed oceans and continents to carve his own piece of the American Dream. His story, like so many others woven into the fabric of Texas, is one of courage, resilience and the enduring spirit of the pioneers.
