How about a tale of love divine within these very walls of Şahu Geda Camii? This mosque stands as a testament to faith and poetry. It is a hidden gem in Istanbul.

Şahu Geda Camii is located in the Aksaray district of Fatih. You will find it near the Küçük Langa Caddesi. The mosque’s story dates back to around 1560. Mehmet Şah, one of the Hünkar Kapıcıları, commissioned it. He was one of the imperial gatekeepers.

Construction likely finished before 1563 because Mehmet Şah died that year. The name Şahu Geda Camii comes from a poem. Taşlıcalı Yahya wrote “Şah u Geda.” This translates to “The Shah and the Beggar”. The poem explores the love between Şah Ahmet and Geda Bilgin. It transforms earthly love into a divine affection.

Şahu Geda Camii is also known as Bostan Camii. This second name links to the famous Langa gardens. These gardens once surrounded the area. Over time, the mosque suffered neglect. Fortunately, kind citizens renovated it in 1978. The last congregation area was enclosed in 1989.

The mosque features a rectangular design. Its walls blend brick and cut stone. Inside, the mihrab is made of plaster. The minber and kürsü are crafted from wood. The ceiling boasts a charming wooden design. It is covered with wooden strips. Half-meter-high wainscoting lines the walls. Each wall has two rows of windows. The roof is covered with tiles.

A single-balcony minaret stands on the west side of the Şahu Geda Camii. It is adorned with a lead-covered cone. In front of the mosque, there is a small courtyard. You will also find an imam’s residence. Ablution facilities and toilets are located underground. A wall encloses the mosque and its courtyard.

Şahu Geda Camii embodies Istanbul’s rich history. It is a blend of architectural beauty and poetic inspiration. It is a reminder of the enduring power of faith. It also highlights the transformation of love. It changed from earthly to divine.
