Tucked away in the vibrant Auckland suburb of Torbay, Long Bay College isn’t just a school. It’s a living story. Long Bay College first opened its doors in 1975. The school grounds whisper tales of growth, resilience, and the pursuit of “Personal excellence for global success,” as their motto proudly proclaims. Long Bay College started as a typical 1970s New Zealand state school. Imagine single-story classroom blocks, sturdy masonry walls, and low-pitched roofs punctuated by clerestory windows. Courtyards offered spaces for connection and contemplation. Long Bay College has seen its share of challenges. In 2017, a fire tragically destroyed the woodwork block, a testament to the unexpected turns life can take. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, the college community rallied, rebuilt, and continued its mission of nurturing young minds. Today, Long Bay College serves years 9 to 13, with over 1,750 students calling this place their academic home. The current principal, CJ Healey, leads a diverse community. Students hail from all corners of the North Shore, from the coastal bays to Brookfield, Albany, and even as far as Paremoremo. A 2018 report painted a vivid picture of the student body. Over half identified as New Zealand European, with a significant portion of other European descent. Asian, Māori, Pacific Islander, and other ethnicities contributed to the rich tapestry of cultures at Long Bay College. This blend of backgrounds and perspectives creates a dynamic learning environment. It’s a place where differences are celebrated and students learn from one another, preparing them for a globalized world. Did you know that a street near Long Bay College is named after its founding principal, Ian Sage? Ian Sage Avenue stands as a quiet tribute to the visionary who laid the foundation for this vibrant institution. From its humble beginnings to its present-day vibrancy, Long Bay College continues to shape the future, one student at a time. It’s a place where history and progress intertwine, creating a learning experience that is both enriching and inspiring.
