Within Jakarta’s rich history stands Masjid Jami Al Mansur. It is a testament to faith and resilience. This mosque is not just a building. It is a living chronicle of Jakarta’s past. Masjid Jami Al Mansur is one of Jakarta’s oldest mosques. It stands proudly in Jembatan Lima, Tambora.

Masjid Jami Al Mansur is more than a place of worship. It is a listed cultural heritage site of Jakarta. Its story is intertwined with the struggles and triumphs of the Betawi people. The mosque is named after Kh. Mohammad Mansur. He was a Betawi figure who bravely resisted Dutch colonial rule. People knew him fondly as Guru Mansur.

Let’s journey back to the 18th century. Raden Abdul Malik, also known as Prince Cakrajaya Adiningrat, founded this sacred place in 1717. His vision extended beyond religious practice. He envisioned a center for community mental education against invaders. Originally named Jami Kampung Sawah this mosque played a crucial role in Indonesia’s fight for independence. It stood against both the Dutch and Japanese forces under the guidance of KH. Mohammad Mansyur.

Imagine the year 1947. Nationalist forces clash with NICA soldiers. Mansur bravely attempts to raise the Red-and-White flag on the mosque’s minarets. These minarets now stand as silent witnesses to that courageous act. After Moh. Mansyur’s death on May 12 1967 the mosque was renamed Masjid Jami al-Mansyur. Its historical significance was officially recognized. It was listed as a cultural heritage object by Governor’s Decree in 1972.

Now let’s turn our attention to the architecture of Masjid Jami Al Mansur. The main hall is the oldest part of the mosque. It measures 12 by 14.40 meters. Four solid pillars stand prominently in the middle of the hall. The pillars have an octagonal base. The main stem is round with decorative seams. Wooden beams support two stairs leading to the attic. These beams feature rhomboid patterned fences.

The roof of Masjid Jami Al Mansur is a limasan. It is a traditional Javanese style. A cylindrical tower stands in front of the old mosque. It reaches a height of 12 meters. The tower has terraces with iron fences. A semicircular dome tops the minaret.

Masjid Jami Al Mansur stands as a symbol of Jakarta’s rich history. It embodies faith resistance and architectural heritage. It is a place where the past meets the present. It is a reminder of the enduring spirit of the Indonesian people. As you leave Masjid Jami Al Mansur remember the stories it holds. Remember the struggles it has witnessed. Carry with you the spirit of Guru Mansur.
