“It’s a wonder it was built at all”. These words echo the sentiment surrounding St. John the Baptist. This church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance.

St. John the Baptist, a Catholic parish church, is considered one of Melbourne’s most beautiful. Its story is one of dedication and community spirit. The church’s consecration centenary was celebrated on October 3rd, 2023. Archbishop Daniel Mannix officiated the elaborate ceremonies back in 1923. He was known as Melbourne’s feisty archbishop. The parish gathered for a celebratory Mass with Mannix. Former parish priest John McCarthy also attended. He was then Bishop of Sandhurst. A parish celebration and students’ picnic followed on the Monday.

Construction of St. John the Baptist took 31 years from 1876 to 1907. Architect John Bunn Denny heavily influenced the design. He drew inspiration from Augustus Pugin. Pugin led the Catholic Revival Movement in England. It’s remarkable that such a grand church was built in Clifton Hill. Clifton Hill was a poor Irish Catholic suburb. Parishioner Thomas Edmund Verga contributed about half the cost. He was a printer. His contributions included the front and rear stained-glass windows. John Hardman and Company of Birmingham manufactured these. Side wall stained-glass windows followed in 1928-29.

St. John the Baptist also houses the second largest interwar Fincham organ in Victoria. The church celebrated its consecration centenary. A photographic exhibition showcased the church and parish history. This exhibition was viewable from September 24th to October 29th.

The Catholic community finds unity in faith. They share love for God and neighbor. The church aims to serve the people of God. It enables the Gospel of Jesus Christ to come alive. St. John the Baptist is part of a supportive community. People pray, learn, and share their lives here. Everyone can feel welcomed and encouraged. They can live the good life of the Gospel.

St. John the Baptist stands as a beacon of faith. It symbolizes the strength of community. Its history is etched in its stones and stained glass. Its story continues to inspire. It welcomes all who seek solace and connection.
