A bronze statue of Napoleon stands before you. Tall and majestic, he perches above the courtyard, his hand resting casually on his stomach. He commands your attention, not with fierce aggression, but with the confident air of a man who once ruled an empire. This is the Napoleon Statue, one of the many representations of the legendary emperor scattered across France. It wasn’t always here though, this iconic symbol of French power has had a wild ride.

Originally, it was commissioned by King Louis-Philippe to be placed atop the Vendome column. However, Napoleon III, Napoleon’s nephew, removed it in 1863, deeming it unsuitable for his vision of his uncle’s legacy. The statue was moved to a busy roundabout in Courbevoie, a suburb of Paris. This is where the story takes a turn for the dramatic. During the Franco-Prussian War, Parisians feared the Prussian army would desecrate the statue, so they removed it from its pedestal and placed it on a river barge. On its journey to safer ground, the boat capsized, sending the imposing statue tumbling into the Seine. Miraculously, the statue was recovered, and re-installed in the courtyard of the Invalides in 1911. Since then, it has stood silent witness to the ebb and flow of history, a powerful symbol of French ambition and martial prowess. As you stand under the watchful gaze of Napoleon, remember his journey. He has been both revered and reviled, but his story continues to echo across the centuries.
