From a humble beginning in a private home, the Capela São Judas Tadeu has blossomed into a beacon of faith. The Capela São Judas Tadeu stands proudly on Rua Cosme Velho, a testament to the enduring devotion to St. Jude. The story of Capela São Judas Tadeu begins not in a grand cathedral, but in the home of Dr. João Xavier de Brito in 1945. The parish, newly separated from Nossa Senhora da Glória, needed a place to worship. Dr. Brito opened his doors on Rua Schimdt de Vasconcelos, offering a temporary sanctuary. Later, a small chapel dedicated to St. Luke, adjacent to the Casa do Médico on Rua Cosme Velho, became the new meeting place. Father Góes, the parish priest, inspired the devotees of St. Jude. Their fervent belief fueled fundraising efforts, eventually leading to the purchase and demolition of Casa do Médico. The cornerstone for Capela São Judas Tadeu was laid and blessed in 1952 by Cardinal Dom Jaime de Barros Câmara. The church’s construction was a community effort. Numerous campaigns raised funds, and the project took flight under the guidance of Engineer Alberto Woods Soares. Architect Benedito de Jesus Calisto Neto, known for his work on the Basilica of Nossa Senhora Aparecida in São Paulo, designed the striking modern structure. The circular nave, elevated and flanked by the temple’s other sections, creates a unique and inspiring space. The interior is adorned with Italian marble, adding to the church’s beauty. In 1968, Cardinal Câmara officially inaugurated the church. Years later, in 1985, it was consecrated as a sanctuary by Cardinal Dom Eugênio de Araújo Sales. Capela São Judas Tadeu’s significance is amplified by its location. It sits facing the railway leading to Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado mountain. This positioning creates a powerful visual connection between two important symbols of faith in Rio de Janeiro. The church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a center for community outreach, providing social assistance and religious education to nearby favelas. The Capela São Judas Tadeu also houses a precious reliquary. It contains two bone fragments of St. Jude, displayed within a cross-shaped reliquary, reminiscent of a monstrance, and protected by glass. The feast day of St. Jude, October 28th, is a major event at the Capela. The church, with its capacity for 800 worshippers, becomes a focal point for vibrant celebrations. This modern sanctuary, born from humble beginnings, stands as a testament to the power of faith and community.
