Imagine 2000 workers constructing Vestvolden Voldpunkt 16. It was Denmark’s largest construction project at the time. Today we stand at Vestvolden Voldpunkt 16 a testament to a bygone era. It is a place where military history meets recreational space.
Vestvolden meaning the Western Rampart stretches about 14 kilometers. It runs from Avedøre in the south to Utterslev Mose in the north. Vestvolden Voldpunkt 16 is a part of the last generation of land fortifications in Copenhagen.
The building of Vestvolden Voldpunkt 16 occurred from 1888 to 1892. This construction began during the “Provisorietiden” or Provisional Time. Prime Minister J.B.S. Estrup lacked a parliamentary majority. Yet he enforced his financial laws. He gained King Christian IX’s support for these provisional laws. This included backing from the Landstinget. Half of the Landstinget’s members were chosen by the Monarch.
The name Vestvolden emerged as an informal term. It described two fortifications end to end. The southern one was named Vestenceinten. The northern one much shorter was named Husumenceinten.
Vestvolden Voldpunkt 16 ceased use as a fortification in 1920. It continued for military purposes though. Finally in 1963 it opened to the public. Since 1993 Vestvolden has been a protected area.
After Denmark’s defeat by Germany in 1864 the need to protect Copenhagen became clear. Thus Vestvolden was built from 1885 to 1894. It formed a vast fortification ring around Copenhagen’s outer perimeter.
The fortifications were never used in war. Most facilities were left deserted. Recently the buildings have been restored. Now we can enjoy this history. We can stroll through the green alleyways the fortifications occupy. Vestvolden stretches almost 15 km. It runs from Utterslev Mose to Avedøre’s beaches. Along the way explore old forts and batteries.
Many forts include descriptions of their past functions. You might even see sheep roaming around. You are allowed to feed the enclosed sheep apples or carrots. Look at the signs for confirmation.
