Has anyone ever told you about the three lives of Memorial United Methodist Church? No? Well, gather ’round, because this Austin landmark has a story to tell. Memorial United Methodist Church stands right here, not always having been “Memorial,” nor always at this very spot. Its first incarnation began in 1873 in downtown Austin. A group of Swedish immigrants founded the First Swedish Methodist Church, laying the groundwork for the community we see today. They worshipped downtown until 1897. The church then moved and was reborn as Central Methodist Episcopal Church. This second chapter lasted until 1957. Imagine the changes Austin underwent during that time. Finally, in 1957, the church moved to its current location at 6100 Berkman Drive, taking on its present name: Memorial United Methodist Church. The campus itself reflects this layered history. Three separate buildings stand as testaments to different eras. The church building itself, housing the sanctuary, choir, and offices, is the heart of it all. Then there’s the Children’s Building, now home to the Wesley School early childhood education center. And lastly, the Gym, complete with its own kitchen and Sunday School rooms, rounds out the campus. While the church’s roots are Swedish, Memorial United Methodist Church has embraced diversity. It’s now a vibrant tapestry of cultures and ages. The church celebrated its 150th anniversary in December 2023, marking a century and a half of faith and community in Austin. So, as you stand before Memorial United Methodist Church, remember its journey. It’s a story of change, growth, and a commitment to faith, echoing the ever-evolving spirit of Austin itself.
