Grief-stricken, Süleyman the Magnificent commissioned the Şehzade Mosque to honor his beloved son, Şehzade Mehmed. It is also known as the Prince’s Mosque. We stand here on the third hill of Istanbul in the Fatih district. Look around. The Şehzade Mosque represents more than just a place of worship. It embodies a father’s love and a city’s rich history.

Şehzade Mehmed was Süleyman’s eldest son with his wife Hürrem Sultan, often called Roxelana. His death at only 21 years old plunged the empire into mourning. The cause of his death remains debated. Some say smallpox took him. Others whisper of murder. Regardless, Süleyman sought to create a lasting memorial to his son.

Master Architect Sinan received his first major imperial commission for the Şehzade Mosque. Construction started in 1543 and concluded in 1548. The Şehzade Mosque is considered the best work of Sinan’s apprenticeship. Yet, Sinan himself saw it as his apprentice piece. He never repeated its design later in his career.

Notice the forecourt. It mirrors the mosque’s size. Sultan Murat IV later donated the ablution space in the center. Imagine worshippers preparing for prayer in this serene space. The design incorporates a square base supporting a central dome. Four half domes and smaller domes surround it. In 2016 a bomb shattered many of the windows. The structure suffered some damage then.

Beyond the Şehzade Mosque itself, the complex includes a mausoleum for Prince Mehmed. There are also two madrasahs, a public kitchen, and a caravanserai. Prince Mehmed’s daughter Hümaşah and his youngest brother Cihangir are also buried here. The Şehzade Mosque complex served various charitable purposes for the poor. This was common for Ottoman imperial mosques.

Consider the twin minarets attached to the Şehzade Mosque. Each has two balconies. Intricate geometric designs adorn their shafts. This level of detail is unique to this mosque. It was seldom repeated in later Ottoman designs.

Inside, the central dome reaches 37 meters high with a 19-meter diameter. Four pillars support the dome. Sinan innovatively distributed the structural load. This allowed for thinner walls and more windows. Light floods the interior.

The design of the Şehzade Mosque influenced later Ottoman mosques. Examples include the Sultan Ahmed I Mosque and the New Mosque. Even the Mosque of Muhammad Ali in Cairo reflects its influence.

The Şehzade Mosque stands as a testament to love, loss, and architectural genius. It is a reminder of a prince mourned and an empire’s artistic legacy. Take a moment to appreciate the symmetry and grandeur. Remember the story of Şehzade Mehmed. Remember the vision of Mimar Sinan. This is the Şehzade Mosque.
