Ever heard whispers of a wagon fit for Dionysus himself? That’s just one secret held by Csillaghegy. We are standing near the very ground where archaeologists unearthed a remarkable piece of Roman history. Csillaghegy is more than just a district in Budapest. It is a place where ancient lives whisper from the earth.

In 2017, near the Csillaghegy Strandfürdő, a lido, history was made. A team from the Budapest History Museum and the Hungarian National Museum discovered a wagon burial site. This was no ordinary grave. It dated back to the Roman period and offered a unique glimpse into the lives of people who lived here long ago.

The discovery was significant because previous digs near the lido had only found traces of prehistoric settlements. They also found remains from the time of the Hungarian conquest. This wagon burial changed everything. It enriched our understanding of Imperial period wagon burials.

The site was located just a short distance from Aquincum. This was the ancient Roman town. The area was once dotted with villa farms. These farms were likely owned by veterans or families who had moved from the east. The closest Roman building was the Csillaghegy villa. It stood a mere 500 meters away.

What made the Csillaghegy wagon burial particularly interesting was the discovery of a plundered child’s grave nearby. Archaeologists believe the two burials were connected. This suggests a deeper story. It hints at family ties and perhaps a shared fate.

The wagon itself was extraordinary. It had four wheels and a seat with back and armrests. It was placed in a large pit ready for a journey. The bodies of two horses were laid on top of and next to the wagon.

The wagon’s ornamentation was exceptional. It made it one of the most beautiful wagons ever found in Pannonia. Fourteen bronze statuettes adorned the wagon. Four of them were gryphons flanked by snakes. Gryphons were seen as guardians. The dragon snakes were likely basilisks. They were known for their deadly gaze.

The wagon also featured ten figural bronze statuettes depicting Dionysus. He was the god of wine and revelry. He held grapes and a vessel pouring wine. Tigers, tamed by the god, lapped up the wine.

The depiction of Dionysus was adapted to the Eraviscus elite’s view of the afterlife. Dionysus offered his followers a happy afterlife. It was reminiscent of a golden age. It closely resembled Celtic views on the afterlife.

The Csillaghegy wagon is significant. It is the first time archaeologists have found the body of a Roman wagon. Experts are reconstructing almost every detail. The restored wagon parts are expected to be exhibited at the Aquincum Museum.

Today, Csillaghegy is also known for its all-season bathing establishment. The Csillaghegy Bath has three pools and a large park. It covers more than 90000 square meters. It is the first public bath opened in Budapest.

So, as you enjoy the modern amenities of Csillaghegy remember the ancient secrets. They lie beneath your feet. The wagon burial reminds us of the rich history. The Roman wagon shows us their beliefs about life, death and the journey beyond.
