Founded in 1909 Mount Olive Lutheran Church stands as a testament to faith and community. This Minneapolis landmark wasn’t always the sprawling complex we see today. It began humbly as an English-language mission church. Forty German-Americans sought to spread Lutheranism by worshipping in the language of the broader community. They purchased land at 31st Street and Chicago Avenue. There they built their first simple structure.

Mount Olive’s story is one of growth and adaptation. The arrival of Reverend Theo H Schroedel in 1921 marked a turning point. Under his leadership for the next forty years the congregation flourished. It became a significant force both within the community and the wider Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. A larger church was completed in 1931. That same church stands proudly today a symbol of enduring faith.

Post-World War II the church experienced a period of remarkable expansion. An education and office wing was added in 1957. This reflected the church’s increasing involvement in the social and ecumenical movements of the time. The innovative cantor Paul Manz achieved international acclaim for his musical contributions. His work elevated congregational singing and organ improvisation.

The progressive spirit of Mount Olive continued to evolve. In 1961 Reverend Alton Wedel’s arrival further deepened the church’s engagement in humanitarian work. This commitment to social justice has remained a cornerstone of Mount Olive’s identity. Later the church’s commitment to liturgical excellence preaching and social justice was reaffirmed through the contributions of Cantor David Cherwien Pastor Joseph Crippen and neighborhood outreach director Anna Scott.

Today Mount Olive Lutheran Church remains a vibrant center of faith. It’s known for its traditional worship services. It’s also known for its innovative programs for people of all ages. With a congregation numbering in the thousands Mount Olive is not only the largest Lutheran church in Minneapolis. It’s also the largest Lutheran congregation in the world. Its legacy is a tribute to the vision of those forty German-Americans. Their vision transformed a simple mission church into a global beacon of faith. A beacon rooted in its Minneapolis community.
