Gazing upon this path I wonder what stories it could tell. Welcome to the Chemin rural du Gâtinois. It’s a slice of the French countryside right here. The Chemin rural du Gâtinois is part of the Gâtinais français. This area is known for its natural regional park.
The Gâtinais region has a rich history. It once was a province of France. It included the valley of the Loing. That is roughly the northeastern part of Loiret. It also included the south of Seine-et-Marne. Under the Bourbons, the Gâtinais was divided. It became part of Île-de-France and Orléans.
The Gâtinais lies between the Seine and the Loire. This is according to the modern tourist slogan. Under the Franks, Gâtinais was the pagus Wastinensis. It was one of five belonging to the Archbishop of Sens. The west part of Puisaye is often considered part of Gâtinais. So is the area around Étampes. Around the 10th century, Château-Landon was the main town.
The western part is Gâtinais orléanais. It corresponds to the arrondissements of Montargis and Pithiviers. Pithiviers has been the most representative town for centuries. The eastern part is Gâtinais français. Nemours was its chief town. It corresponds to the arrondissement of Fontainebleau.
This area is mainly agricultural. The west is wooded. For centuries, it was known for saffron. But that crop disappeared because of high labor costs. Now, saffron is reappearing thanks to the natural regional park. The area is also famous for its honey. It is produced by traditional methods.
The Regional Natural Park offers an ideal playground for cycling. Nestled between Essonne and Seine-et-Marne it has varied landscapes. History culture and nature blend harmoniously. This happens along peaceful roads and bucolic paths.
The Boucle Cyclo des Artistes is a 45 km route. It reveals the most beautiful aspects of the Park. This route is accessible to all. It takes you through picturesque villages. You will also see forests and historical sites. The route starts in Milly-la-Forêt. The Halle du XVᵉ siècle is an architectural jewel there. The Chapelle Saint-Blaise-des-Simples is decorated by Jean Cocteau.
The route continues to Courances. There you can find the Château de Courances. This 17th-century building is surrounded by French gardens.
The Chemin rural du Gâtinois. A reminder of the region’s agricultural past. It is now a path for leisure and connection with nature. Take a moment to appreciate the blend of history and countryside. It defines this unique corner of France.
