This melancholy scene before us depicts “La Mort du lion”, a somber monument to the king of the jungle. Created by Edmond Desca, a sculptor from the late 19th century, it found its home here in Parc Montsouris in the 1930s. Notice the three figures carrying the weight of the lifeless lion. They are depicted with distinct African features, their expressions etched with sadness. The stark white of the limestone emphasizes the tragedy of the scene. This powerful imagery reflects the complex relationship between humanity and nature. La Mort du lion is a reminder of the delicate balance between life and death and the respect we owe to all creatures.
