A chill wind whispers through the branches. It carries the echoes of a life cut short. Before you stands the Mindesten for Ebbe Rørrdam. This unassuming stone marks a pivotal moment in Danish history. A moment of sacrifice and bravery.
This memorial honors Ebbe Rørrdam. A young man a member of the Danish resistance. He was only twenty years old when he died. His life was tragically cut short during a daring raid.
Ebbe was part of BOPA. This was a large resistance group. The name stands for Borgerlige Partisaner or Civilian Partisans. It was actually controlled by Danish communists. They previously operated under the name KOPA. The name change was a tactical move. Ebbe quickly rose through the ranks becoming a group leader.
His involvement in BOPA led him to participate in some of the biggest sabotage actions of the occupation’s final phase. One notable action was on January 2nd 1945. The target was the Torotor factory in Ordrup. It made parts for radios. It also supplied German factories. British intelligence learned the factory produced parts for new German rockets. BOPA was ordered to destroy it. Despite heavy guards they succeeded. The factory was blown to smithereens.
BOPA also operated in Copenhagen’s western suburbs. This area became a Wild West of resistance activity. Many actions targeted trains. The resistance desperately needed weapons and ammunition. In March 1945 BOPA received intelligence. A large shipment of rifle cartridges was to be transported to Germany. They planned an attack on March 15th. However the train was too heavily guarded. The attack happened the following day. Fifty German soldiers were on the train. They opened fire when the train stopped. The ensuing firefight cost Ebbe Rørrdam his life. He and a comrade were fatally wounded.
Ebbe’s dedication to freedom cost him his life. After the war he was buried in Mindelunden at Ryvangen. This Mindesten for Ebbe Rørrdam stands as a reminder of his courage. It’s a testament to the sacrifices made during the Danish resistance. It serves as a symbol of hope and freedom. Remember his name. Remember his story.
