Do you hear the echoes of history whispering from these walls? This is the Holy Church of St Demetrios. It stands as a testament to faith, community, and the enduring spirit of Melbourne’s Greek Orthodox community.
Let’s step back in time to 1963. The Board of Management of the GOCMV sought to serve the religious needs of its members in Melbourne’s inner suburbs. They purchased this property for 40,000 pounds. The property included an old church, a hall, a kindergarten, and an adjoining house.
The minutes from a board meeting on August 6, 1963, offer rich details. The church was already 70 years old at the time of purchase. The main church could seat 500 people. The hall was divided into two rooms. One room could accommodate 200 people, and the other 250. The church’s roof was made of slate. The adjoining house had seven rooms valued at 7,000 pounds. The property also included two flats valued at 8,000 pounds and kitchen facilities.
Over time, generous donations and local parishioner fundraising events transformed the old church. They built a new church temple. Ecclesiastical icons and chandeliers were purchased. This transformed the space into an impressive place of Orthodox worship.
For over forty years, the Holy Church of St Demetrios has been conducting masses. Today, the Church of St Demetrios continues to be a vibrant center. It is a place where faith is nurtured, traditions are honored, and community bonds are strengthened.
The Church of St Demetrios’s feast day is celebrated on October 26th. It is led by Reverend Diamantis Kourabis. He can be reached at +61 3 9510 7880 or +61 4 18 559 889.
