Here, towering above us, is the SHB Stahl- und Hartgusswerk Bösdorf GmbH. This isn’t just another factory. It’s a place where molten metal transforms into mighty components.

SHB Stahl- und Hartgusswerk Bösdorf GmbH has a long history. Max Heller founded a steel trading company in Leipzig in 1894. It grew into a foundry. In 1917, it relocated to Bösdorf and was named Max Heller Nachfolger.

During the DDR era, the company became VEB Stahl- und Hartgusswerk Bösdorf. They even used the first light arc furnace built in the DDR here. SHB became vital to the brown coal industry. It made steel castings for open-cast mines and more.

The original site at Bösdorf had to make way for the Zwenkau open-cast mine. In 1984, SHB moved to a new facility in Knautnaundorf. Komatsu, a Japanese firm, installed the modern production equipment. It was the most advanced foundry in the DDR.

Imagine 1,200 people working on this 55,000 square meter site. They produced around 6,000 tons of steel castings annually. After 1990, SHB became STAMAG. Later, it was re-established as SHB Stahl- und Hartgusswerk Bösdorf GmbH. Today, it belongs to the Dihag Holding.

SHB makes steel castings for various industries. These components end up in resource extraction, energy production and vehicle engineering. They are also used in construction machinery. You might find SHB parts in trains and cranes. They even appear in oil production plants.

Look up there. Notice the chimney. That is the highest structure in Leipzig. The SHB Stahl- und Hartgusswerk Bösdorf’s chimney stretches 205 meters into the sky.

SHB Stahl- und Hartgusswerk Bösdorf GmbH continues to produce high-quality steel castings. The company employs around 235 people. In 2021, it achieved a turnover of approximately 28 million euros. They create steel castings from 30 kilograms to 5,000 kilograms.

They offer internships in all their training professions. If you are interested, contact Ms. Susan Golomb. Her email is golomb@shb-guss.de and her telephone number is 0341 4279-409.
