Opened in 1927, Vestre Kirkegård stands as a serene testament to Aarhus’ history. It began because Nordre Kirkegård was running out of space. Vestre Kirkegård started as a modest five hectares. Today it covers 16.9 hectares.

As you stroll through Vestre Kirkegård note the two chapels. The Store Kapel dates back to the cemetery’s opening. Frederik Draiby designed it and it seats 252 people. The Lille Kapel is smaller and more modern. Henning Larsen designed it in 1969. It accommodates 50 people. The Lille Kapel also includes a crematorium.

World War II left a deep mark on Vestre Kirkegård. Here lie 17 resistance fighters. They perished in the Neuengamme concentration camp. Aarhus Municipality erected a memorial wall. It honors 15 citizens who died in German concentration camps and were buried elsewhere. A grave site commemorates 13 victims of a 1944 harbor explosion. These victims could not be identified. Vestre Kirkegård also holds memorials for two Soviet prisoners and 11 British soldiers. There is a grave site for 299 German soldiers who died in 1945. Another site holds 619 German refugees who also died in 1945.

Many notable figures rest in Vestre Kirkegård. They include mayors Hans Peder Christensen and Orla Hyllested. Footballer Henry From and architect C. F. Møller are also interred here. Writer Tage Skou-Hansen rests here too.

Vestre Kirkegård is more than just a burial ground. It reflects Aarhus’ past. It offers a peaceful space for reflection. The cemetery serves as a reminder of the city’s resilience. Its memorials honor those who shaped its history. Take a moment to appreciate the stories etched in stone here.
