Remember the 1950s? The Parkbühne im Clara-Zetkin-Park was just a vision then. Today, we stand before one of the largest open-air stages in the region.
This Freilichtbühne, or open-air stage, has a rich history. Its construction began around March 2, 1955. It was initially planned by a man named Weber. In those early days, the Parkbühne hosted diverse events. There were open-air cinema screenings. Leipzig universities performed theater here. Choirs sang, and summer film festivals took place. Rock, pop, folk music, and Schlager concerts filled the air.
After decades of closure, MAWI Concert GmbH revived the Parkbühne in 2000. The venue became attractive to megastars once again. Backstage areas were renovated. Sanitary facilities were updated. The stage received a huge roof.
The Parkbühne’s atmosphere creates close contact between artists and guests. This unique vibe attracts international stars. Van Morrison, B.B. King, and Billy Idol have graced this stage. The Pogues, Foreigner, and Jethro Tull have also performed here. Status Quo, The Sweet, and Toto have entertained Leipzig crowds. Kris Kristofferson, Brian Setzer, and Camouflage have all appeared. Melissa Etheridge, Rea Garvey, and Body Count have rocked this park. Katie Melua, Kiefer Sutherland, and Men At Work are more names to add to the list.
Many German stars love the Parkbühne, too. Bela B, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Element of Crime have played here. Fury in the Slaughterhouse, Helge Schneider, and Joachim Witt have taken the stage. Karat, Keimzeit, Nena, and Rosenstolz have delighted fans. Wir sind Helden and many others have performed here as well.
For years, the Parkbühne served as an impressive open-air backdrop for the Wave-Gotik-Treffen. Its beautiful location in the green Clara-Zetkin-Park makes it a magnet for everyone. Each year, diverse concerts and shows captivate thousands.
Even during the challenging Corona years of 2020 and 2021, the Parkbühne wasn’t entirely silent. In the summer of 2020, the open-air space offered summer cinema evenings. Exclusive shows allowed audiences to enjoy concerts safely. Artists like Talco, Diary Of Dreams, and Covenant performed. Witt, Helge Schneider, and Olaf Schubert also entertained.
Today, the Freilichtbühne continues to host a wide array of events. From Stereoact to Matthias Reim, the stage is alive with music. Olli Schulz & Band and Der Traumzauberbaum are set to perform. Peyton Parrish and Jimmy Eat World will soon take the stage. Melissa Etheridge and The Robert Cray Band are also on the schedule. Jacob Collier, Ben Zucker, and The Hooters are among the upcoming acts. Dream Theater and Beth Hart will bring their sounds here, too. Fury in the Slaughterhouse and Irie Révoltés will also perform. The Parkbühne remains a vibrant part of Leipzig’s cultural scene.
