From its humble beginnings in 1902 Saint Benedict Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith and community. This wasn’t just any church. It was born from a need. German Catholic families in West Lakeview needed a school closer to home. Their children faced long journeys. Severe winters made the commute difficult. The Archbishop initially rejected their requests. However their persistence led to the formation of Saint Benedict Parish.
The first mass at Saint Benedict Catholic Church was celebrated on February 2 1902 in a simple wooden structure. The location was carefully chosen. Irving Park Road was a boulevard free of trolley cars. This ensured the safety of the children attending the school. The parish grew rapidly. Within three years they outgrew the initial building. A larger church was built. It featured the church on the second floor and classrooms below.
By 1916 the parish had grown immensely. A new church was needed. World War I brought economic hardship. Yet the faith of the parishioners prevailed. Construction of the present stately church with its iconic Bell Tower began in 1917 and was completed in 1918. The cost was $170000 a significant sum at the time. The stunning stained-glass windows imported from Munich and the hand-carved Stations of the Cross from Oberammergau are testaments to their dedication.
Saint Benedict Catholic Church continued to thrive. An elementary school was built in 1924. A convent was added in 1927 which now serves the elderly. A high school opened in 1950 followed by a gym in 1954. In the late 1990s the church underwent extensive renovations. These included roof and brick restoration and a complete interior renovation. The church was made handicap accessible.
A generous anonymous donation in 1999 spurred the construction of a new three-story 40000 square-foot building. It houses facilities for all the schools. This included preschool classrooms science labs a music center and a chapel. Saint Benedict Catholic Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living community. A century of faith generosity and commitment continues to this day. Saint Benedict Catholic Church stands as a powerful symbol of faith hope and enduring community spirit. It has served the North Center neighborhood for over a century. Today it remains a beacon of faith and a vital part of Chicago’s rich history.
