“Ever feel the embrace of history and faith converging?” Right here before us stands the Parroquia Niño Jesús in Buenos Aires. It is more than just a church. It embodies the spirit of Villa Lugano. This beautiful neo-Gothic church offers reflection and prayer. Locals and visitors experience peace here. They actively participate in parish life.

The Parroquia Niño Jesús has a captivating story. Its origins trace back to the dedication of Monseñor Espinosa and Padre Adolfo Tornquist. Monseñor Juan Duprat blessed it on April 17, 1923. Presbítero Dámaso Conde took interim charge.

María Adela Harilaos de Olmos donated land on Murguiondo 4055. She was the widow of Córdoba’s wealthy governor. Her generosity enabled the construction of this beautiful church. The Parroquia Niño Jesús became Villa Lugano’s first parish.

In May 1925, Padre Mario Fabián Alsina arrived. He was a unique priest. He became a pillar of the church in this emerging southern district of Buenos Aires. Locals called him “El cura gaucho” meaning the gaucho priest. He understood the social challenges of the time. He addressed the spiritual needs of his parish.

Padre Alsina wore a beret and cassock. He rode on horseback. He even performed baptisms at people’s doorsteps. He was a true shepherd. He earned sincere affection. For 44 years, he spread faith tirelessly.

No roads were impassable for him. Neither storms nor illnesses stopped him. Among his many achievements, he built a school. Today, it is named Colegio Parroquial “Canónigo Honorario Mario Fabián Alsina.” His remains rest in the church since 1973. It is a testament to his immeasurable gift.

The church’s 90th anniversary was in 2013. Celebrations were planned. It was even announced that Francisco would lead a mass. It was scheduled for March 23 after his return from the Vatican conclave. However, his appointment as Pope disrupted the celebration.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the church’s stained glass windows were restored. MinimalArq studio and local artist Alicia Roiger managed the work.

Today, the Parroquia Niño Jesús continues to serve its community. It offers daily masses. The mass schedule is consistent throughout the week. It is a sanctuary for those seeking solace. It is a beacon of faith for Villa Lugano.

As you stand before the Parroquia Niño Jesús feel its history. Sense the dedication of those who built it. Remember Padre Alsina, the gaucho priest. He tirelessly served his community. This church represents faith and service. It is a true gem of Buenos Aires.
