The Lombard Gospel Chapel, standing proudly on West Ash Street, is a testament to faith and resilience. Founded in the late 1920s, the chapel emerged from a group of individuals who left the Lombard Methodist Episcopal Church after a disagreement over their beliefs. This group, including families like the Durants, the Kellars, and Frank Erickson, sought a place to worship freely. They had a vision for a church that adhered to the teachings of the New Testament and embraced the principles of the Christian Brethren Movement.

The chapel was built in 1928, and it quickly became a focal point for the community. The initial years were marked by rapid growth, particularly in the Sunday School, which attracted over 150 children by 1930. Throughout the decades, Lombard Gospel Chapel remained a place of spiritual strength and guidance. It hosted notable speakers like James McKendrick from Scotland and H.A. Ironside, the pastor of the Moody Memorial Church in Chicago.

The 1950s saw another significant milestone for the chapel. The congregation sought a new building and eventually moved to its present location on North Stewart Street. The Sunday School, by this time, had expanded beyond the original building, requiring a larger space to accommodate the vast number of children who attended. The chapel continued to evolve and grow, welcoming families from all walks of life. Despite the passage of time and changing demographics, Lombard Gospel Chapel has remained a spiritual haven for generations of worshippers. It’s a place where faith is nurtured, community is strengthened, and the message of God’s love resonates with a quiet power.
