Gazing up at The Sentinel, have you ever wondered about the stories it holds? This towering giant, a luxury residential skyscraper in Takapuna, Auckland, has been a silent observer of the city’s evolution since its opening in February 2008. The Sentinel stands tall with 30 storeys, reaching a height of 120 meters. It dominates the Takapuna skyline, offering residents breathtaking views of the Waitematā Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf. The Sentinel isn’t just a building; it’s a woven tapestry of architectural motifs. Notice the recurring square shapes in the glass facade, a subtle nod to the traditional woven flax baskets of New Zealand. Even the latticework of the facade hints at this cultural heritage. The Sentinel’s creation is a story of ambition and changing regulations. Developed by Cornerstone Group, it was built by Multiplex Constructions for NZ$60 million. The North Shore City Council granted the project a non-notified consent in 2003. This was due to the positive reception of the idea of a landmark building in Takapuna. Interestingly, the developer later stated that the regulations had become so complex that building The Sentinel would be impossible under current rules. Imagine the challenges they overcame to bring this vision to life. Within The Sentinel’s sleek exterior lie 117 apartments, each a haven of luxury. One can only dream of living in the top-floor penthouse. This expansive 675 square meter space sold for a staggering NZ$11 million in 2007. For those fortunate enough to call The Sentinel home, level four offers a shared oasis. Here, a 25-meter heated swimming pool, spa, sauna, and gym await, surrounded by tranquil landscaped areas. The Sentinel is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of modern Auckland, a testament to architectural ingenuity and a beacon of luxury living on the North Shore.
