The rose window glows. It bathes the interior in the warm hues of a Parisian sunset. Welcome to Église Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire.

This unassuming church holds a fascinating story. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to faith community and architectural ingenuity. Built between 1910 and 1911 it stands as one of the first churches constructed after France’s separation of church and state in 1905.

The story begins long before the church’s construction. Mademoiselle Salomée Ascher a devout woman and schoolteacher opened a small school in the then-developing Plaisance neighborhood. Abbé Soulange-Bodin a vicar from a nearby church visited her school. He established a small oratory there called Chapelle Notre-Dame du Rosaire.

Abbé Boyreau Soulange-Bodin’s successor expanded the school and created numerous social programs. These actions laid the foundation for the future Église Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire. The church was designed by Pierre Sardou. His design. A Romano-Byzantine style likely influenced by the Church of the Holy Apostles in Florence. Reflects a return to simpler forms after the grandeur of Sacré-Cœur Basilica.

Sardou’s design won him the prestigious Bailly Prize from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1919. The church’s simple yet elegant structure features a visible wooden vaulted ceiling. Its bright brick exterior. Now a light yellow after restoration work in 1996. Contrasts beautifully with the colorful stained-glass windows.

These stunning windows are largely the work of Henri-Marcel Magne. They depict scenes from the life of Christ. The Litanies of the Virgin Mary and other religious imagery. They fill the space with light and color. They create a spiritual ambiance. The church also features other notable artistic works. A stone sculpture of the Virgin Mary presenting the rosary to Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena. A triptych depicting the Education of the Virgin. An organ built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. A true masterpiece restored several times.

Even the church’s modifications reflect its ongoing relevance. The choir’s arrangement changed after Vatican II to allow for mass facing the congregation. A narthex was added in the 1970s. It improved accessibility and energy efficiency. Renovations throughout the years have kept the church vibrant and relevant. They have ensured its continued service to the community.

Today Église Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire continues to be a lively center of faith and community. It hosts Sunday masses various activities and associations. This is a church that thrives. Its beauty and significance are rooted in its rich history and its enduring spirit. As you stand before it feel the weight of its past and the vibrancy of its present. It truly is a hidden gem in the heart of Paris.
