Vjetrenica. What does this name mean? It means wind cave or blowhole. This name makes sense when you feel the strong winds blowing in summer.

Vjetrenica is the largest cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is one of the most important caves in the Dinaric Alps. This mountain range is famous for its karst and speleological riches. Vjetrenica is only 60 km from Dubrovnik.

Imagine this cave was first mentioned in the middle of the 1st century. It opened to the public in 1964 but closed during the war in 1991. It then reopened in 2009. Now it attracts visitors from all over the world.

Inside Vjetrenica, you will find over 6.5 km of underground channels. Vast halls and corridors await. See clusters of speleothems. Discover a rich hydrographic world. Lakes, waterfalls, and creeks flow in different directions.

The temperature inside Vjetrenica is always 11 degrees Celsius. Strong winds blow because of temperature and pressure differences. Ceilings have collapsed over time creating a unique landscape.

Vjetrenica is more than just a cave. It is a protected monument of nature since 1950. It became a geomorphological nature reserve in 1981. Vjetrenica is a strong symbol for this area of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In 2024, Vjetrenica Cave was recognised as a World Heritage Site.

The cave was once a riverbed. Water created everything you see here. The cave is 22 km long but only 7 km have been explored. Researchers believe there is a way out to the island of Šipan in Croatia.

Vjetrenica boasts a rich ecosystem. Over 200 animal species live here. 37 are endemic. The olm or cave salamander is the most famous. These creatures are hard to spot. They feed on microorganisms and can live for a century.

Look for the stalagmite called Turkish cemetery. See the Hajdučki stol. These stone blocks served as a table and chairs. Outlaws hid here during Ottoman rule.

Traces of human life have been found in Vjetrenica. People lived here thousands of years ago. A replica of a cave bear greets you at the entrance. The remains of the bear and a leopard are in the National Museum.

A visit to Vjetrenica offers a cool escape. It also provides a glimpse into a hidden world. The cave’s unique features and rich history make it a destination to remember.
