Gazing up at the Igreja de Santo Inácio, can you sense the echoes of history? This church in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, holds a story that spans over a century. The current Igreja de Santo Inácio wasn’t the first church bearing that name in Rio. The original Igreja de Santo Inácio began construction in 1567 atop Morro do Castelo, within the Jesuit college. Padre Manuel da Nóbrega oversaw the project. Unfortunately, this church was never completed.

The Jesuits were expelled from Brazil in 1759. Their college on Morro do Castelo was transformed. It became the Court’s Military Hospital. In 1808, it housed one of Brazil’s earliest medical schools. Following independence, the hospital became known as São Zacharias. Sadly, the hospital and Morro do Castelo met their demise in 1922. Relics from this bygone era, including the bell from the original Igreja de Santo Inácio, found a new home. They were preserved at the current Igreja de Santo Inácio in Botafogo.

This current Igreja de Santo Inácio has its own fascinating history. Construction began in 1909, alongside the new Santo Inácio College buildings. The college needed more space for students. Construction on the church paused to prioritize expanding the college. Even unfinished, the church received Cardinal Arcoverde’s blessing on December 3, 1912. It opened its doors to students and locals the following year. The church wasn’t fully completed until 1935. Further changes came in the 1960s, reflecting liturgical reforms surrounding the Second Vatican Council.

The church’s architecture shows Romanesque influences, featuring a high altar and two side altars forming the arms of a cross. A striking stained-glass window depicts Saint Ignatius of Loyola being carried by soldiers after his injury at Pamplona in 1521. The walls hold fourteen Stations of the Cross, liturgical symbols, and emblems of the Society of Jesus. The high altar showcases “The Glorification of Saint Ignatius”. It echoes the style of prominent Jesuit churches in Rome. Saint Ignatius, in traditional vestments, gazes towards God, ready to embrace His will. Above, two angels display the Jesuit motto: “Ad maiorem Dei gloriam” – For the greater glory of God.

The columns in the nave frame side altars dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of Victories, reflecting important devotions during the church’s construction amidst the turmoil of World War I. Beneath the presbytery lies a crypt. It houses the remains of Jesuits who passed away in Rio de Janeiro, moved from the Society of Jesus’ mortuary chapel in São João Batista Cemetery. The Igreja de Santo Inácio stands as a testament to faith and resilience, a beacon of history amid the vibrant life of Botafogo. Its story intertwines with the earlier Jesuit presence on Morro do Castelo, a reminder of the enduring spirit of faith in Rio de Janeiro.
