Victor “Ving” Fung’s Dickies jumpsuit, splattered with a rainbow of paint, became a familiar sight in 2015. Right here at 2226 N Milwaukee Ave, the Greetings from Chicago Mural was born. This mural, Ving and Lisa Beggs’ first official stop on their Greetings Tour, exploded in popularity. It even landed a spot on Chicago’s Wikipedia page, television, and magazines. The Greetings from Chicago Mural became a vibrant postcard splashed across the city. It captures the spirit of Chicago, blending historical landmarks with modern twists. The mural showcases deep-dish pizza and hot dogs, the iconic skyline, and the Logan Square Monument. A unique abstract piece by local artist Amuse126 portrays Chicago’s wild weather. Chicago sports teams get a shout-out. Music and entertainment are represented by Muddy Waters and a nod to “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” And of course, the Bean, “Cloud Gate,” shines in all its reflective glory. Creating this 14-foot by 32-foot masterpiece wasn’t easy. Ving and Beggs battled Chicago’s unpredictable weather, working through the night to avoid rain and wind. They camped in their RV nearby, guarding their scaffolding and becoming part of the neighborhood’s fabric. They chatted with locals, absorbing the area’s unique character. The baby blue background, a tribute to the Chicago flag, turned out to be a happy accident, perfect for prints and photographs. They hadn’t initially considered this aspect. Even the near-miss car accident caused by a distracted driver became a memorable anecdote. The Greetings from Chicago Mural became a testament to the power of community and public art. It’s a landmark that continues to bring smiles and capture the essence of Chicago. Ving and Beggs still visit, touching up their creation and reconnecting with the city that launched their nationwide artistic journey.
