A century of prayers unanswered. That’s the story of the Svabhegyi Református Templom. Here we stand before this modern marvel a testament to unwavering faith.

The Svabhegyi Református Templom wasn’t always this beautiful building. Its history stretches back to the late 19th century. Református services were held on Svabhegy even then. But a dedicated church building? That took over a hundred years of persistent effort.

Imagine the congregation’s perseverance. They first initiated a collection in 1901. Three years later they requested a suitable plot of land. Their hopes were dashed that time. Services continued nonetheless. First in the Diana utcai iskola then in the Boldogh villa.

The Second World War interrupted their efforts. After the war communal life almost ceased. Services moved to a temporary location. The Szent László-plébánia church’s classroom then the Jókain iskola. The community’s spirit remained strong.

In 2002 the Svabhegyi Református Egyházközség finally began constructing their own church. The foundation stone was laid in April 2003. The lower level was ready by the end of that year. Two years later the dome was complete. There was no electricity or heating initially. The congregation persevered. Services were held in their new space regardless.

A generous donation of ten million forints was crucial. This significant contribution from an elderly Catholic woman helped secure the dome in 2005. The Svabhegyi Református Egyházközség officially formed that year. By 2012 it became fully independent.

Construction continued through the years. The completed church was consecrated in October 2013. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Mayor Zoltán Pokorni attended the ceremony. The final exterior cladding and spire were finished in March 2014. A thanksgiving service was held in April that year. The church’s dedication symbolizes the enduring strength of the community. It also displays their unwavering faith.

Now we stand here before the Svabhegyi Református Templom. It is a testament to decades of prayer. The building is a beautiful tribute to the congregation’s perseverance and faith. It’s a remarkable achievement. A story of hope and community. A symbol of resilience in the face of hardship.
