Could you imagine echoes of Norwegian hymns resonating through these very walls? This is Ballard First Lutheran Church. It is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to Ballard’s Scandinavian heritage.

Ballard First Lutheran Church has been an integral part of this community. The church stands at the corner of 20th Avenue NW and NW 65th Street. It reflects the area’s strong Scandinavian roots.

The church’s story began long before this building even existed. On April 26, 1894, the first Lutheran congregation in Ballard was organized. It was named Zion Lutheran. They were members of the Norwegian Synod.

They first gathered in a simple store building. Then, in 1896, they built their first dedicated space. Years later, another congregation formed. Bethlehem Lutheran organized on October 5, 1905. They were part of the United Norwegian Lutheran Church. They also erected their own building.

In 1917, a significant event occurred. Three Norwegian Lutheran bodies merged. This formed the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America. This union reshaped the landscape of Lutheranism in the area.

The current edifice wasn’t always Ballard First Lutheran. It was originally built in 1928. Bethany Norwegian Church constructed it. Over time, congregations evolved. They adapted to the changing neighborhood. Yet, they maintained their dedication to faith and service.
