Gazing across Saint-Genis-Laval, can you sense the echoes of history? This commune, nestled within the vibrant metropolis of Lyon, whispers tales of Roman actors, archbishops, and even royalty. Saint-Genis-Laval’s story begins with Saint Genis, a Roman actor martyred under Diocletian. To distinguish it from other similarly named villages, “of the valley” was added in the 13th century, morphing into “Laval” by the 15th century. The first documented mention of Saint-Genis-Laval dates back to 807, marking a donation by Archbishop Leidrade. In 984, it officially appeared as one of Lyon’s 52 parishes under the archbishop’s ownership. The canons of the Lyon Cathedral, entrusted with the land, constructed a castle where the present church stands and fortified the village. This medieval footprint is still visible today in the city center’s layout, from the ancient tower in the vicarage garden to the northern port and remnants of the surrounding wall along Rue des Halles. Saint-Genis-Laval was not merely a religious center. In 1306, Pope Clement V rested at a manor in Laye after his coronation in Lyon. Pilgrims flocked to Notre-Dame-de-Beaunant, drawn by its miraculous spring. The chapel, rebuilt in the late 19th century, still stands as a testament to this devotion. In 1434, the Burgundians occupied Saint-Genis-Laval, adding another layer to its rich history. The Château de Beauregard, once the home of Florentine banker Thomas de Gedagne, hosted King Charles IX and his court in 1564. Though only fragments of the castle walls remain, the gardens, terraces, and Nymphaeum offer a glimpse into its former grandeur. Today, this space thrives as a municipal park, a tranquil haven within Saint-Genis-Laval. The Lyon Observatory, a scientific beacon, also calls Saint-Genis-Laval home. Established in 1887, it continues to contribute to astronomical research, a modern marvel amidst historical whispers. From its Roman roots to its royal encounters and scientific endeavors, Saint-Genis-Laval offers a captivating blend of past and present.
