Do you see that building across from the cricket pavilion on Twickenham Green? That is Twickenham United Reformed Church. It has stood here for many years. It is a place of worship and community.

Twickenham United Reformed Church has a rich history. Its story began with Lady Amelia Shaw. She was the second wife of Sir Robert Shaw. In 1835, Lady Shaw’s schoolroom was registered for public worship. This schoolroom is the site of the current church hall. The first chapel was built in 1844. The premises were rebuilt and enlarged in 1866.

Lady Shaw played a vital role in founding the church. She married Sir Robert Shaw in 1834. The Shaw’s home was located at the corner of First Cross Road and Hampton Road. This included the sites of the present church buildings.

The Shaws did not have children. Lady Shaw died in 1860. Her estate claimed ownership of the church buildings. Andrew Bowring, a church member, stepped in. He bought the site and sold it to the trustees.

The church faced challenges. In the late 1870s disagreements arose. The church was dissolved and run as a mission. In 1882, members re-formed as an independent Congregational Church.

In 1972, Twickenham Congregational Church joined the United Reformed Church. This united Congregational and Presbyterian churches. The church has evolved over time. Its members have changed. Today, Twickenham United Reformed Church continues to be a welcoming community.

Services are held every Sunday. You can worship God with fellow members. Holy Communion is celebrated regularly. The church also hosts midweek groups. These include Bible study and prayer meetings. Visitors are always welcome to Twickenham United Reformed Church.
