A Methodist presence has graced Kingsdown Avenue for over a century. This is Kingsdown Methodist Church. It stands as a testament to faith, community, and transformation.
The story of Kingsdown Methodist Church is one of evolution. It started with a dual-purpose hall in 1908. This humble beginning paved the way for the Moullin Memorial Church in 1928.
Kingsdown’s identity was truly forged in September 1959. The Moulin Memorial Church joined forces with the West Ealing Church. The Rev. Frank Reedman guided this amalgamation. Funds from the West Ealing site fueled a significant transformation of Kingsdown. The original structure was reimagined. A new sanctuary emerged. The tower was removed and a welcoming vestibule was added. The gallery disappeared. The front wall and pulpit moved forward. New vestries were constructed. The organ found a new home.
All auxiliary buildings were replaced. A suite of new buildings arose. During construction, Sunday School found a temporary home. It was located in the Northfield Community Centre. The Rev. George Howarth led the congregation at the time. Mrs. Vera Reedman opened the new hall. Mr. E Gilbert opened the Church.
The church continued to evolve. A sports arena was added. England Football Manager Walter Winterbottom opened it. The kitchen and minister’s vestry were altered. The Russell Room was created. Miss Russell’s generous gift made it possible.
Many ministers have served Kingsdown Methodist Church. They include Rev. John Crouch, Rev. Lesley Webb, Rev. Eric Maynard, Rev. Denis Dobell, Rev. Jack Roberts, Rev. David Holland, Rev. Cecil Smith, Rev. Roger Dunlop, Rev. Peter Catford, Rev. Chrissie Howe, Rev. Rachel Bending, Associate Pastor Penny Pedley, and Rev. Susan Male.
Kingsdown Methodist Church recently completed Phase One of a major redevelopment. The Northfields Avenue end now boasts meeting rooms. A new coffee point and upgraded facilities enhance the space. A 6-meter high cross serves as a focal point. These changes have altered the public perception. Phase 2 will focus on access and community room facilities.
