Can a hill have secrets? Betsom’s Hill, standing silently before us, certainly does. While not towering like some mountains, Betsom’s Hill holds the distinction of being the highest point in Kent. This seemingly peaceful hill hides a past full of anticipation and military might. Did you know that during the Victorian era, fear gripped the hearts of Londoners? The threat of foreign invasion loomed large. To counter this, a series of defense forts were strategically positioned along the North Downs, and Betsom’s Hill was chosen as a crucial point. Imagine the activity, the urgency as a fort, known as Betsom’s Hill Fort or Westerham Fort, took shape. This was no ordinary fortification. It was intended to be a mobilization center for volunteer troops and a storehouse for ammunition, ready to repel any potential attack. Sadly, very little of this defensive marvel remains. Today, the site of Betsom’s Hill Fort has been repurposed, with workshops and homes, aptly named Fort Cottages, standing as a testament to its intriguing past. Although the fort no longer stands guard, Betsom’s Hill, with its rich history and tranquil presence, continues to captivate those who seek its slopes.
