“Imagine a treasure trove brimming with the echoes of Kispest’s past”. This is the Kispesti Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény. Here within these walls the history of Kispest unfolds. It’s more than just a museum it’s a journey through time.
The collection’s roots reach back to 1935. A mayoral decree aimed to preserve Kispest’s rich heritage. Its tangible and intangible elements were to be gathered and protected for future generations. By 1938 the museum’s creation was included in Kispest’s city plan and budget. The grand vision involved a museum building on Kossuth Square. It would include a theater and concert hall. Sadly this dream remained unrealized. A surviving inventory from 1943 lists 720 items already collected.
Despite numerous official plans after 1950 suitable conditions for the collection remained elusive. The local educators and patriots kept the flame alive. Teacher Mária Benyó’s tireless dedication was instrumental. The collection grew through donations and was showcased regularly to the local community.
The Kispesti Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény houses key sources on Kispest’s history. These include period newspapers. There are also brochures and letters. Photographs maps and artistic works are found here. The collection even includes artifacts that aid in the study of daily life. This collection is of significant historical importance.
The museum strives to align with the trends of Western European small museums. It is enhancing its thematic collections with a broader profile. The collecting efforts focus on the industries that once shaped the district. These now defunct factories’ materials are sought after and preserved. This includes the former Porcelain-Tile- and Clay Works the Granit. It was crucial for Hungary’s ceramics and porcelain production.
The Kispesti Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény aims to collect more than commonplace household items. They seek early examples of the Granit factory’s products. Figurative and decorative objects are actively sought. Their goal is to study and highlight lesser-known yet characteristic high art pieces.
Alongside its permanent exhibition the Kispest Local History Collection organizes temporary displays. It also publishes local history publications and supports research. The museum assists local history researchers students and university students with their theses. It maintains extensive connections with local history collections and galleries in other districts.
The Kispesti Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény treasures the legacy of outstanding artists who once lived in the district. Through its art exhibitions it supports local artists both current and those from the past. Since 2004 it has also organized exhibitions in the Nagy Balogh János Exhibition Hall. Their goal is to showcase the visual arts aspect of local history. The focus is the 20th and 21st-century art of Kispest. Remember Kispest became a municipality in 1873. It achieved city status in 1922. Since 1950 it has been Budapest’s 19th district. The legacy of Kispest lives on in this remarkable collection.
