Established on August 25 2002 GPIB Taman Harapan stands proudly in Jakarta. Initially a modest structure its humble beginnings belie its rich history. This church named Rumah Gereja Maranatha then was only 10 x 12 square meters. It could only hold around 140 people.
Growth necessitated expansion. By 2005 290 families were part of the congregation. A renovation was planned. The ambitious project aimed to increase capacity. It needed 447 500 000 Rupiah. This would add balconies. Fundraising began. 151 000 000 Rupiah was raised. However initial plans stalled.
A new building committee formed in 2008. They chose a contractor. The renovation transformed the small church. A modern structure with a capacity for hundreds emerged. The construction involved a delicate balance. Services continued on the ground floor even during major renovation work. The final cost was 923 000 000 Rupiah. This impressive structure was built with the generous support of Maxwell Armand Oktoselja. Its completion marked a significant milestone.
Sadly the church’s journey was not without conflict. Disputes arose over leadership. Pendeta Helmy Sherly Wattimury was dismissed in 2014. A lengthy legal battle ensued. The church was occupied by another group for almost a decade. This resulted in GPIB Taman Harapan being unable to use its own building. The congregation persevered through this challenging period.
In a remarkable turn of events the church was reclaimed in February 2024. A mediated agreement allowed both GPIB Taman Harapan and the Gereja Anugerah Bentara Kristus to use the building. A significant victory for GPIB Taman Harapan. Its resilience highlights its deep faith and commitment to its community. The church continues to serve as a beacon of hope and worship. Its story a testament to perseverance faith and the enduring power of community.
