Founded in 1946 Martin Temple AME Zion Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. Its story begins with Reverend R H Collins Lee. He established the church naming it in honor of Presiding Bishop John W Martin. Initially located at 5733 South State Street the congregation quickly outgrew its space.
The early years were marked by both triumphs and challenges. Minnie Grant became the first member. Ten others joined on August 4 1946. By 1950 membership soared to 164. The church then embarked on an ambitious project. They bought a bus garage. Their dream was to build a church large enough to host the General Conference. Reverend Collins Lee served for a decade guiding the church through its initial growth and struggles.
After Reverend Lee’s departure Reverend William T Kennedy took the helm. He faced immense financial difficulties even a mortgage foreclosure. Services were held in unconventional locations. These included an American Legion Post a funeral home and finally an Apostolic Church on State Street. Despite these setbacks Reverend Kennedy inspired the congregation to build a new church. Faithful members like R D and Hattie Lennon and Vhaness Freeman provided crucial financial support. This secured the property at 7158 South Indiana Avenue.
The new church building on Indiana Avenue became a reality in 1959. Reverend William M Poe continued the work. He oversaw the completion of the building with the help of a dedicated congregation. The church remained there for 33 years. Reverend Nathaniel Jarrett Jr’s long tenure from 1972 to 1996 saw the church flourish. He served as pastor for over 24 years. His leadership coincided with the Civil Rights movement. He fostered a diverse congregation including tradesmen lawyers nurses and many others. His emphasis on spiritual growth led to significant community outreach programs. These included mentoring initiatives tutoring programs and a food ministry.
In 1992 Martin Temple AME Zion Church moved to its current location at 6930 South Cottage Grove Avenue. This beautiful new sanctuary and service center fulfilled their long-held vision. The church continued to experience leadership changes. Each pastor brought their own contributions. Reverend Dr Eric L Leake the current pastor has guided the church through healing and growth. The church is now debt-free a testament to the enduring spirit of its members.
Today Martin Temple AME Zion Church stands as a vibrant center of faith. It continues to serve the community offering a range of programs. It is a place of worship a beacon of hope and a lasting legacy. The church’s journey is a remarkable story of faith perseverance and community spirit. Itβs a story that continues to unfold.
