“Who was Charles H. Graham?” you might ask while standing here at this plaque. The To the memory of Charles H. Graham Plaque honors a man of many talents. It recognizes his dedication to baseball. This plaque stands as a tribute.

Charles H. Graham’s story is more than just about baseball. He was president and co-owner of the San Francisco Seals. A newspaper clipping from 1948 mourned his death. It noted many baseball greats went to the majors from the Seals during his time.

But there’s another Charles H. Graham. This Charles H. Graham was an artist. Born in Illinois, he worked for Harper & Brothers. His town views appeared in nearly every issue from 1880 to 1892. Before Harper’s, he painted theater backdrops in Chicago. He even worked as a topographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad.

He captured the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1883. He extensively covered railroads for Harper’s. In 1884, he sketched New Orleans during the World’s Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition. Yellowstone National Park was another subject, rendered from his Chicago studio.

From 1883 to 1896, he was active in San Francisco. Graham was a member of the Bohemian Club. He also belonged to the San Francisco Art Association. He frequently exhibited his work there. He directed color at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. He did the same in California at the Midwinter Fair. After Harper’s, he became a freelance illustrator. After 1900, he painted in oil.

Could these two Charles H. Grahams be one and the same? History often intertwines different paths. Regardless, this To the memory of Charles H. Graham Plaque serves as a reminder. It celebrates dedication, whether in art or baseball. It marks the contributions of a man named Charles H. Graham.
