In 1949 a groundbreaking church opened its doors. Christ Church Lutheran stands as a testament to modern design. It’s a story of faith perseverance and architectural brilliance.

Christ Church Lutheran wasn’t always the sleek modern structure we see today. The congregation initially envisioned a Gothic Revival church. The Great Depression and World War II delayed construction. Then rising building costs threatened to halt the project altogether. A new pastor Reverend William A Buege saw a different path. He championed a more economical contemporary Scandinavian design.

Pastor Buege’s bold decision led him to Eliel Saarinen a renowned Finnish-American architect. Saarinen son of a Lutheran minister agreed to design the church. His design would be a departure from traditional church architecture a bold statement of modernism.

Saarinen’s design was innovative. The building appears as a simple brick box. But the walls are not parallel. This subtle irregularity impacts the acoustics enhancing the sound of music and speech. The brickwork is almost deceptively simple. Only its placement and the whitewashed area behind the altar add subtle variation. A strategically placed window illuminates this wall creating a spiritual ambiance.

Saarinen’s design proved both beautiful and cost-effective. The church’s construction cost significantly less than the proposed Gothic design. It became an influential model for other congregations seeking affordable modernist churches. The church’s dedication ceremony took place in December 1949 with Saarinen present. Sadly it was his last completed work. He died the following June.

Christ Church Lutheran’s legacy doesn’t end there. A decade later the congregation commissioned an education wing. This time Eero Saarinen Eliel’s son took on the task. Again it was a successful and economical design complementing his father’s masterpiece. This wing too became Eero’s final project. He died in 1961 before its completion.

Christ Church Lutheran is more than just a place of worship. It’s a National Historic Landmark a stunning example of modernist architecture. It’s a living testament to the vision of a congregation the artistry of the Saarinens and the enduring power of faith. It continues to inspire architects and congregants alike. Its simple yet profound design invites peace and reflection. It’s a legacy built on faith vision and a unique architectural collaboration.
