Beneath this very spot, ideas took root. Today we stand before the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. It is a leading center for mental health and neuroscience. This institute is dedicated to understanding, preventing, and treating conditions affecting the brain.

The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience is a faculty of King’s College London. Previously, it was known as the Institute of Psychiatry. The IoPPN works closely with the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Many senior academics also serve as honorary consultants. They work in clinical services like the National Psychosis Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital.

The institute’s history is intertwined with the Maudsley Hospital. They share the location of the main building. Frederick Mott and Henry Maudsley envisioned facilities for teaching and research in 1896. The Maudsley Hospital opened in 1923. It was a result of Henry Maudsley’s donation.

Originally named the Maudsley Hospital Medical School in 1924, it became the Institute of Psychiatry in 1948. Aubrey Lewis was appointed the first Professor of Psychiatry. He held the position until his retirement in 1966. The main building opened in 1967. It houses lecture theaters, offices, a library, and a canteen.

In 1959, Eliot Slater led a group of genetic researchers. They received funding to establish the MRC Psychiatric Genetics Unit. Although it closed in 1969, psychiatric genetics continued. It evolved into the MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre. The SGDP Centre moved into a new building in 2002.

The Institute of Psychiatry split from the Maudsley in 1997. It became a school of King’s College London. The Henry Wellcome building opened in 2001. It houses most of the IoPPN’s psychology department. A new Centre for Neuroimaging Sciences opened in 2004. It provides offices, lab space, and MRI scanners for research. In 2014, the institute was renamed the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. The remit broadened to include all brain and behavioral sciences.

The Addictions Department researches tobacco, alcohol, and opiate addiction. It also studies related policies and treatments. The Biostatistics department advises on statistical techniques in psychological research. They collaborate with the Neuroimaging section.

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry department studies developmental disorders. These include ADHD, depression, autism, and learning difficulties. The department is linked to the Michael Rutter Centre at the Maudsley Hospital. Forensic Mental Health Science studies antisocial and violent behaviors. It focuses on people with mental disorders.

The Neuroscience department researches diseases like Alzheimer’s and motor neuron disease. The institute houses the Medical Research Council Centre for Neurodegeneration Research. The Department of Clinical Neuroscience contains the MRC London Neurodegenerative Disease Brain Bank.

The Centre for Neuroimaging Sciences is a joint venture. It involves King’s College London Institute of Psychiatry and the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. The Psychology department conducts research in neuropsychology and forensic psychology. It also studies cognitive behavioral therapy. The department offers expert services to hospitals and community teams.

The Department of Psychological Medicine addresses common mental disorders. These include depression, anxiety, PTSD, and eating disorders. The SGDP center studies the interplay between genetics and environment. It aims to understand risk factors for depression, ADHD, and autism.

The Psychosis Studies department focuses on schizophrenia and related disorders. The Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute opened in 2015. It focuses on developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, mental disorders, and neurological diseases.

Approximately 70% of the IoPPN’s income comes from research. Twenty percent comes from clinical work. Ten percent comes from postgraduate courses.

The IoPPN has a long-standing partnership with South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience has a strong tradition of exploring how artistic collaboration can inspire innovative ideas. It is an international community with partnerships and research collaborations across the globe. The IoPPN works with healthcare providers, policy makers, industry and other universities.
