Have you ever heard the story of the Dresden Kreuzkirche? Its history is woven into the very fabric of this city. Right here before you stands this magnificent church a testament to resilience and faith.

The Kreuzkirche or Church of the Holy Cross is more than just a building. It is the main church and seat of the Landesbischof of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Saxony. It’s the largest church in the Free State of Saxony. Did you know it’s also home to the renowned Dresdner Kreuzchor boys’ choir? Their tradition stretches back over 700 years.

This spot held a Romanesque basilica dedicated to Saint Nicholas since the twelfth century. A small chapel dedicated to the True Cross existed. It eventually became the name of the whole church. Officially dedicated on June 10 1388 it endured numerous changes. Rebuilt as a hall church it later burned down. The Wettin electors of Saxony residing in Dresden since 1464 had it rebuilt. In the 18th century the church underwent significant transformations. The Prussian cannonade during the Seven Years’ War heavily damaged it. Johann George Schmidt a Dresden master builder planned a Baroque reconstruction. Neoclassicist architects opposed his plans. Prince Francis Xavier of Saxony supported Schmidt. The foundation stone was laid in 1764. But the westwork collapsed in 1765. Schmidt had to accept Friedrich August Krubsacius as an advisor. The choir and steeple were completed in 1788. The new church was consecrated in 1792. Construction finished in 1800.

Sadly a fire in 1897 gutted the interior. Art Nouveau elements were added by Schilling & Graebner. The bombing of Dresden on February 13 1945 damaged the Kreuzkirche again. Only the tower and outer walls remained. Reconstruction lasted from 1946 to 1955. The exterior was carefully restored. The interior was kept simple without elaborate decoration.

The Kreuzkirche has stood through wars fires and rebuilding. A symbol of enduring faith it continues to resonate with the spirit of Dresden. Its story is one of survival of artistry and of the unwavering spirit of a community. Step inside and let the history speak to you.
