Have you ever wondered what it was like to attend a French school in the late 19th century? Right here, at École Maternelle Jules Ferry, the spirit of Jules Ferry, the man who shaped French education, still resonates. Jules Ferry, a lawyer and Minister of Public Instruction, championed free, mandatory, and secular education for all French children aged 6 to 12. His reforms laid the foundation for the modern French public school system, known as l’École Républicaine. Imagine a classroom in the 1880s. The teacher, a stern figure in a grey smock, stands on a platform by the blackboard. Students sit at meticulously polished wooden desks, equipped with inkwells and pen holders. They write in neat notebooks, using purple ink and blotting paper. Calligraphy was essential. Left-handed students, like myself, were often pressured to switch. At École Maternelle Jules Ferry, and in other French schools of that era, education was rigorous. Subjects included history, geography, math, grammar, spelling, writing, calligraphy, poem recitation, vocabulary, science, art, and choir. Memorization was key. Good behavior and diligent work earned students “bons points” and picture cards with special messages. Misbehavior, however, resulted in public humiliation. Students might stand in the corner with hands on their heads or wear a dunce cap. Physical punishment was officially prohibited, but public shaming was common. Beyond academics, French schools aimed to instill patriotism. Daily ethics lessons emphasized politeness, honesty, sobriety, cleanliness, and respect. Following France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, the government used schools to train future patriots. School battalions were formed. Boys, some as young as 12, trained with rifles, preparing for military service and the potential reconquest of lost territories. By 1892, these battalions were replaced by twice-weekly PE classes. But the seeds of patriotism and the desire for revenge had been sown, contributing to the tragic events of World War I. École Maternelle Jules Ferry represents not only the legacy of Jules Ferry but also a bygone era in French education.
