Settled amidst the rolling hills and verdant landscapes, Doreen whispers tales of a bygone era. Doreen’s story begins in 1844 with Patrick Reid, a pioneer who christened this land “Hazel Glen”. Imagine the tranquility of this untouched haven, where the Plenty River meandered through the landscape. The name Doreen, however, has a different origin. It was bestowed upon this locale in 1895 by John Gavan Duffy, the Victorian Postmaster-General. The original name, Hazel Glen, lived on through the local post office, established in 1870. Doreen wasn’t always the bustling suburb we see today. Initially, it was a scattering of farms, a small community bound by the shared experience of rural life. A Methodist church, erected in 1862 at the intersection of Yan Yean Road and Chapel Lane, became the heart of this growing community. Education followed soon after, with the Hazel Glen Common School opening its doors in 1867. This school, later known as Doreen Primary School, stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to education. Today, Doreen is a blend of old and new, where the echoes of its rural past intertwine with the vibrancy of a modern suburb. Divided by Yan Yean Road, Doreen offers contrasting landscapes. To the east, the Shire of Nillumbik preserves the rural charm, a seamless extension of Yarrambat and Nutfield. The west, nestled within the City of Whittlesea, pulses with suburban life, connected to Mernda and South Morang. Did you know that Doreen is home to Laurimar? This residential estate, developed by Delfin, a subsidiary of Lend Lease Corporation, embraces “semi-rural” living. Picture yourself strolling through Laurimar, surrounded by greenery and the gentle hum of suburban life. Doreen’s growth is a testament to its allure. The 2016 census recorded a population of 21,298, a significant jump from its humble beginnings. This growth is reflected in its educational landscape, boasting six schools as of August 2018. From the historic Doreen Primary School to the modern Hazel Glen College and Plenty Valley Christian College, Doreen offers a diverse range of educational opportunities. Doreen is more than just houses and schools. It’s a community woven into the fabric of Melbourne’s history, a place where the past whispers through the leaves and the future unfolds with every sunrise. As you stand here, imagine the generations who have walked this land, their stories etched into the very soul of Doreen.
