Ever wonder where the spirit of the tiger roars in the heart of Tigre? Here stands the Nahuel Rowing Club. It is more than just a sports club. It is a testament to Argentina’s rich history and diverse cultural influences.

Nahuel Rowing Club has a fascinating story. It began in 1916 as the Nacional Rowing Club. The Argentine government later forbade private institutions from using “national” in their names in 1937. Walter Latte cleverly suggested renaming it Nahuel Rowing Club. This preserved the original initials NRC. “Nahuel” is the Mapuche word for tiger. This alludes to the town of Tigre where the club is located.

The club’s burgee reflects its identity. It features a vertical design of white blue white. The letters N R C are placed in the respective stripes. The letters are countercolored.

Rowing and Tigre are deeply intertwined. The story began around 1870. A group of young amateurs toured from Buenos Aires to Tigre. A friendly regatta occurred on the Luján River the following year. It was deemed perfect for the sport. The first official regatta in Argentina was held on these waters on December 10 1873.

The Buenos Aires Rowing Club was founded that same year. It became the dean of water sports. The sport grew thanks to English Spanish French Nordic and Italian communities. Their clubs lined the Luján and Tigre rivers. They adorned what is now the Lavalle Victorica Promenade.

Tigre is the cradle of Argentine rowing. It was officially designated so in 1973. Today half of the events by the Argentine Rowing Association occur in Tigre. The latest national Olympic champions Tranquilo Capozzo and Eduardo Guerrero were members of local clubs.

Tigre is a candidate for UNESCO’s World Heritage Site distinction. This is due to its rowing clubs and riverside architecture. These institutions and buildings have remained unchanged for decades. This reflects the plurality of communities that forged Argentina’s nationality.

Nahuel Rowing Club stands proudly among these institutions. It is located on the banks of the Tigre River at Lavalle 235. The club continues to foster a love for rowing. It preserves the traditions that make Tigre so special.

So next time you see the waters of Tigre remember Nahuel Rowing Club. Think of its history and its contribution to Argentina’s sporting heritage. It is a place where the spirit of the tiger lives on. It embodies the passion and dedication of Argentine rowing.
