Three wooden boxes stand proudly. They are the heart of the NanJing Road Shang Hao Ba Lian Shi Jing Zhan Shi Guan. These aren’t just any boxes. They’re time capsules. They hold the legacy of the heroic Ba Lian soldiers.

Imagine 1959. Soldier Xie Changsheng crafted a toolbox. He used scrap wood. He added small tools and nails. This humble box was used for repairs. Xie Changsheng spent his own money on it. His superior wanted him to report the expense. Xie refused. “The country is mine. I am the country’s. My money is the country’s. Why report?” he said. Before leaving his unit Xie gave his toolbox to fellow soldier Li Zhugen. He urged Li to remember diligence and frugality as the unit’s treasure.
Li Zhugen honored Xie’s legacy. Besides his normal duties Li started a new business: shoe repair. Soldiers affectionately called him “the all-purpose repairman.” Li passed his skills and the toolbox onto soldier Sun Chuanxin. Thus began a tradition.
The NanJing Road Shang Hao Ba Lian Shi Jing Zhan Shi Guan displays these tools. It shows the evolution of the “Three Boxes”: the woodworking box the shoe repair kit and a general tool box. They stand for the Ba Lian’s self-reliance and ingenuity. They are passed-down treasures representing their spirit.
Another exhibit showcases two police rifles. These weathered rifles saw many storms. They represent the Ba Lian’s commitment to duty. Their steadfast dedication to protecting their country is visible in every scratch.
In 1956 a rainy night Sergeant Wang Yuanxiao stood guard. His superior saw him. The superior offered Wang a raincoat. “Why not go to the shelter?” he asked. Wang replied “If I left my post and the enemy breached security I would have failed.” His dedication became legendary. He was a symbol of unwavering vigilance.
